Strokes is the 4th leading cause of death in America. Is a very debilitating disease and can affect not only the person but also their loved ones. It can happen any time of the day with out warning. Over half of strokes occur in older adults age 65 or older. Risk of strokes double from age 55 to age 85!

A stroke is caused by a blood clot in the brain. The blood clot stops the blood flow causing a “brain attack”. Brain cells are used to provide nutrients and oxygen to the brain. When cells begin to die it makes it hard for oxygen to get to the brain. In a matter of hours brain cells can be die or become damaged. If given quick, proper treatment these cells can be saved and the person will recover faster. Knowing the symptoms is important!

Signs of a stroke

  • Numbness or weakness to face, arm, leg or all 3.
  • Confusion, dizziness
  • Speech becomes impaired
  • Problems with vision, double vision
  • Struggle with walking or loss of balance
  • Sudden severe headache
  • Nausea, vomiting, drowsiness

Some types of strokes can be “mini strokes” that go away after a few moments. If you sense something isn’t right call 911 immediately!

Recovery after a stroke may be a lifelong process for everyone who is involved. Some people recover fully from a stroke while others face challenges and hardships for the rest of their lives.
