Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal Cancer is predominate in the elderly community and it is important for caregivers and loved ones to pay close attention to signs and symptoms in the older adult. Screenings could help prevent or cure this disease.

Unlike many types of cancers, Colorectal cancer affects both men and women. It is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Colorectal cancer is cancer  of the rectum or colon. It affects over 100,000 people each year and over 50,000 people die from this form of cancer. Over 90% of people who may  unfortunately get Colorectal cancer was older adults over the age of 5o.

Screenings are extremely important for older adults and colorectal cancer should not be one that goes unnoticed. Colorectal Cancer screening can save older adults lives letting them embrace their life fully. These screenings can help find precancerous polyps. By finding these polyps early it could save the life of your loved one or someone else’s loved one. It is preventable when caught early and can be cured at a faster rate. When transporting an older adult age 50 or older to the doctor ask about Colorectal Cancer screenings.

Unfortunately this type of cancer does not cause considerable symptoms especially during the early stages. This is why screenings are so important.

Some Signs and Symptoms include:

  • Bloody stools (during bowl movements)
  • Persistent stomach pains, aches, or cramps
  • Unexplained weight loss
