Springtime for Seniors

Today is the first day of spring and it is all about rejuvenation and growth! Spring is not only for the young but also the young at heart. Older adults deserve the chance to get outdoors and experience the exciting new season. Seniors with disabilities should not be kept indoors. They are at greater risk for developing depression. Depression is a serious illness in the geriatric population with 15 out of 100 reported to have it. It is important to get older adults outside of the house and enjoying the fresh spring air. Just by letting them experience the freshness of the air can help boost happiness and self esteem .

Here are some ideas that will be beneficial not only physically but mentally also:

  • Gardening
  • Taking walks with loved ones or caregivers
  • Spending time with their grandchildren at parks and recreational centers
  • Bicycling
  • Learning something new such as dancing, ta chi, yoga, painting
  • Bird watching
  • Swimming
  • Attending community events

Loved ones and caregivers should encourage outdoor activities for seniors. Taking advantage of the spring time weather will help with older adults health (mentally and physically),  increase self esteem as well as develop more  independence.
