Optimal Engagement Approach

Research has shown that keeping baby boomers, seniors, and older adults engaged helps them improve and sustain memory, creativity and intellect. They are able to stay healthier longer. This engagement provides the confidence for increased independent living which will result in a higher quality of life. In order to do this, our Lifestyle Coaches and Coordinators utilize what we like to call the Optimal Engagement Approach. This is a holistic approach that keeps our members engaged physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually. We focus on three main areas:

Physicial- We encourage our members to become active as they can. Staying active reduces the likelihood and severity of illness, reduces falls, and strengthens the body. Our Lifestyle Coordinators encourage our members to participate in the activities of the home as they can. At times, can be easy to fall into the mentality of doing thing for our loved one’s instead of with them. We encourage our members have a least one thing per day that they want to do such as folding clothes, washing dishes, cooking food, or even yoga.

Social– Being with family, friends, and acquaintances is important. It fosters a sense of connectedness. It strengthens us knowing that we are not alone. Loneliness is something a lot of older people suffer from. We encourage our members to become socially engaged by attending events, keeping in contact and visiting others. For members with long-distance relatives, we have either accompanied them on trips or set up video conferencing so they can see each other on a regular basis.

Mental– Keeping a sharp mind will increase confidence and sustain competence. We encourage activities such as crossword puzzles, reading the newspaper, setting and implementing goals. When our Lifestyle Coordinators usually arrive they typically ask the question, “ Mr./Ms. Doe, what would like for me to do today?” This question not only gets them to recall the things that need to be done, but they can obtain a greater sense of independence knowing they can still direct the administration of their home.

These three areas lead to a higher quality of life for our members. We encourage them to set goals and create an action plan on how to accomplish those goals. We want them to maintain a sense of being loved, visible, and remembered. They will gain more confidence and motivation to continue learning which keeps the mind sharp. It is essential to keep moving forward with full speed. Our Lifestyle Team keeps these core focus areas in mind when performing any service because we know it will provide a substantial improvement to the lives of our members. We call that Optimal Living.
