Decrease the Risk for Falls

The risk of Falls increases as we age and it can be a  growing concern among older adults.  1 out of  3 older adults fall each year. That is an alarming rate that we all need to take notice of! There are many  factors to consider which can include medical conditions and safety hazards at home. Falls are preventable, with the right knowledge the rate of falls can decrease.

The first risk to consider about  falls are preexisting conditions. Medical conditions such as osteoporosis, bleeding tendencies, dementia, or Parkinson’s disease can increase the risk for falls. If falls occur frequently check with the doctor immediately their may be a sign of  new underlying conditions. Muscle weakness, especially in the legs,  among older adults are of great concern. It is always important for older adults to maintain their muscle strength. Going for walks, riding a bike or anything to get them moving is very important. Another risk to consider is blood pressure dropping when they get up, this is referred to as orthostatic hypotension. When a person gets up from a sitting or lying down position their systolic blood pressure drops. If a person gets up to fast they may become dizzy, lightheaded, or they may even faint! Before getting up from a lying or sitting position try to encourage the older adult to wait a few seconds and then get up slowly. Poor vision is also another risk factor. The correct type of glasses and bright lighting can reduce falls.  Medication can pose a major risk because older adults take a lot of drugs often at one time. Check with the doctor to see if any of their medication (including over the counter medication ) could cause dizziness or unsteadiness.

Falls occur mostly at home, it is very important to look for safety hazards in the home. Some safety hazards to consider is loose rugs, poorly lit rooms, clutter on the floors, wet floors, furniture placement, and other obstacles when walking. Not having rails in the homes can create a risk. Having rails for stair ways, rails in the bathroom, and rails outside leading to their home can decrease the risk. Simple changes can make the home safer. Reducing falls is very important to Senior Lifestyle Concierge.
