Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of a Stroke

 

Each year approximately 800, 000 people suffer from a stroke. Three quarters are in those over age 65. Statistics show someone has a stroke every 40 seconds in this country. One American dies every 4 minutes. This is indeed a medical emergency. It is not something that one should ignore or take lightly.
It is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. There are 3 types of strokes: Ischemic, Hemorrhagic, and Transient Ischemic. Ischemic Stroke occurs in 85% of all stroke cases. In this type, the artery that provides oxygenated blood to the brain becomes blocked. Hemorrhagic Stroke occurs when the artery leaks blood or ruptures. Lastly, Transient Ischemic Attacks are referred to as mini-strokes. It blocks blood flow to the brain for only a short period of time (5 minutes or less). This is usually a warning sign of a future stroke—typically within 1 year if they do not seek treatment.

Strokes can affect men and women in the same way. Symptoms include: sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body in the face, arm, or leg. There is confusion with trouble speaking, or understanding speech. Some experience trouble seeing. Walking can be affected due to dizziness, loss of balance. Lastly, headache without a cause is a symptom as well.
If you or anyone you see are experiencing these signs, it is vital to ACT FAST.

F- Face: Ask the person to smile. Take notice if there is drooping on one side
A- Arms: Ask the person to lift both arms. Take notice if there is one arm drifts downward.
S- Speech: Ask the person to repeat a basic sentence. Take notice if there is slurring.
T- Time: Call 9-1-1 Immediately if you observe any of these signs. Time is of the essence.

You may be able to prevent stroke or reduce your risk through healthy lifestyle choices and medication. It is vital that you speak with your doctor to determine your risk and ask for more information on how you can reduce your risk.
