Eating Well and Aging

Nutrition is important throughout a person’s life span and older adults are not an exception to the rule. Your daily food consumption is vital to promoting and preventing health related issues as we age. Eating well can reduce diabetes, strokes, cancer, osteoporosis, and heart disease. Eating well can also help with current health concerns such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other chronic conditions. Getting the right amount of vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, and fats can help keep you active and living a more happier fulfilling life. Do not believe the myths and stereotypes of society.

Other benefits of eating well include increased energy, decreased weight, and digestion. Digestion is a great concern in the older adult. You may notice your loved ones always worrying about their bowel movements. The best way to aid in digestion is too provide them with loads of vegetables, food with plenty of fiber as well as drinking tons of water. Medication can sometimes cause constipation, get informed about their medication.

If an older adult needs help with losing weight it is important to make little changes over time. Remember eating well is a life choice. Eating well does not mean you need to spend more.

Ways to spend less while eating well:

  • Plan ahead and create a shopping list
  • Check store flyers for sales
  • Choose store brands instead of name brands.
  • Coupons and discount cards can be very helpful
  • Shop on the outside perimeter of the store (Other aisles can entice you to spend more)
  • Check your local community for food banks.

In  conclusion eating the right foods will help reduce health concerns , diminish chronic problems, and change your health for the better. Take care  of the ones you love as well as yourself so that you too can live a more optimal life!
